Decal Application
Step-by-Step Instructions

Please read over this entire page prior to attempting to apply your decal or removing the application tape or paper backing.

First things first . . . The surface temperature should be below 90 and above 50 degrees (F) for best results. Also, avoid applying the decal in windy conditions, particularly large or extra long decals. Next the area will need to be clean and free of dirt and debris. After a normal cleaning, prepare the area of the non-pours smooth surface with a clean lint free cloth or rag using 70% Isopropyl Alcohol (common rubbing alcohol works fine)

Next, you will need to decide which direction you want to work the decal onto the surface from. Left handed people may want to work from right to left and visa-versa. Depending on the size and shape if the decal, it may be easier to work from top to bottom or bottom to top verses side to side. For extra long decals, such as decals containing long lines of text, the decal can be cut into sections. This usually works best after it is placed on the surface and secured with tape on one edge. Smaller sections are easier to work with and allow less room for errors.

Once you decide, follow the steps in the photos in order to achieve the best results.

Note: The application tape shown in these photos is white, since white is easier to see in the photographs. However, the application tape we most commonly use is clear and is basically the same thing as the white tape shown here. Both types are to be gently removed after the decal is applied to the surface.

Also note - For very small decals and/or decals with very small or tiny parts:
If any part of the vinyl does not appear to release from the application tape, allow the tape and vinyl to go back down into place and burnish (briskly rub) the top side of the tape over the vinyl. You can use your thumb or a credit card (or similar firm yet pliable object). This will warm up the adhesives and usually the vinyl will release easier after it warms up a little. Is sometimes necessary to leave the application tape in place for a while, a few hours or even over night in some cases before the application can be gently removed.

Also note - For very large and/or long decals:
When working with large or really long decals, to avoid accidentally sticking a part of the decal to itself or in the wrong place, working the surface "wet" is an option to consider. Prepare a soapy solution using 4-5 drops of dish soap to 1 quart of water. Do not add too much soap, as this will prevent proper adhesion. The soapy water will keep the adhesive from sticking until it dries. This will allow you to adjust the decal or, if needed, reposition or even work out any wrinkles or bubbles that may be present.

Use the mild soapy water solution between between steps 1 & 2 below. Position the decal (as shown below) and remove release liner (backing paper) exposing adhesive. Wet the back of the exposed vinyl and the application surface thoroughly. Press decal onto the application surface removing some of the solution. Position the decal where you want it, then take a step back to eye up the alignment. Re-position as necessary. Once properly aligned, go over entire decal with a soft cloth and squeegee to ensure bond and that no air bubbles are present. Then allow to dry before removing the application tape. Check your work the next day. If you find air bubbles, pierce them with a pin and gently work the air out of the area with your squeegee. To ensure a permanent bonding, allow at least 72 hours in direct sunlight before washing or waxing.

Step 1 Step 2 Step 3

Attach the decal in the area desired using a strip of masking tape as shown above. The tape will serve as a sort of "hinge" for the decal and hold it in place while you remove the white backing paper.

Fold the decal over as shown and burnish the back side with a credit card (or similar firm yet pliable object) then slowly begin removing the white backing paper from one corner.
While holding the decal firmly (so that it doesn't fold over and stick to itself or the wrong place on the surface) gently remove the white backing paper and discard.

If any section of the decal appears to not be releasing from the paper easily, see Step 2 b below. Otherwise continue with Step 3.

Continue to hold the decal away from the surface while slowly folding it part way back towards the surface as shown. Beginning with the area next to the masking tape, start rubbing the topside of the decal and application tape with your thumb. Pressing firmly with a side to side motion, making about 1 inch passes, rub the decal and tape onto the surface while holding the end up and away from the surface until you get it all rubbed down into place.

Step 4 Step 5 Step 6

Once the decal is into place, and before removing the application tape, use a credit card (or similar firm yet pliable object) to serve as a squeegee and firmly rub down the decal. Using a back and forth motion, rub out any air bubbles that may exist.

You are now ready to remove the application tape. Start with any corner and gently and slowly pull away the tape at a 45 degree angle. If any of the decal tries to lift with the tape, repeat Step 4 and focus rubbing a little harder on the area that is not sticking.

If any small air bubbles exist at this point, simply take a sharp pointed object, like a straight pin or needle and poke a tiny hole in the center of the bubble. Next rub out the air with your thumb, working from the outside of the bubble to the center where you poked the hole.

Step 2 b
When any part or all of the decal appears to not be releasing from the white backing paper easily, allow the backing paper to go back into it's original position fully covering the sticky part of the decal (as it was before you started). Then let the entire decal, including the paper, lay back flat against the surface. Next rub the application tape and vinyl firmly against the flat surface with a credit card or application squeegee. Do this on one side then turn it over and burnish the back side again. This will press the tape against the vinyl firmer and should allow the paper to be removed easily. Repeat Step 2. If you continue to experience difficulties with the paper sticking to the vinyl, leave the decal on the surface for a while to allow the adhesive to "set up" or cure for a little while. The smaller the decal or parts in the decal, the longer you may need to allow the adhesive to cure.
